Lakers are the Number 1 Seed

The Prior Lake wrestling team is the No. 1 seed in Section 2AAA for a fourth straight year and will be seeking a fourth straight title.

The No. 3-ranked Lakers have beaten No. 10 Shakopee the last three years for the crown, including a 59-3 drubbing last year. The Sabers earned the No. 2 seed in the nine-team field, so a fourth straight finals dual is in order.

The section quarterfinals are Feb. 13 with the top-four seeds wrestling at home. The Lakers will get the winner of eighth-seeded Bloomington Jefferson and ninth-seeded Edina at 7:15 p.m. The Jaguars and Hornets will wrestle in Prior Lake at 6 p.m.

Other quarterfinal duals: Shakopee versus seventh-seeded Chanhassen, Lakeville North versus sixth-seeded Lakeville South and fourth-seeded Eden Prairie versus fifth-seeded Bloomington Kennedy.

The semifinals and title match are Feb. 15 at Lakeville North at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.

The Lakers take a 22-8 overall dual record into the tourament (7-1 in the South Suburban Conference). Prior Lake closed the regular season at the Kennedy triangular Feb. 6 beating the host Eagles 47-19 and pinning Shakopee 43-19.

The Lakers won the last six weights over the Sabers by a 32-0 margin.

Prior Lake also wrestled the dual without two of its eight ranked wrestlers - senior Blake Carlisle (No. 5 at 145) and senior Luis Pinto (No. 3, heavyweight).

Other ranked Lakers: junior Dylan Sogge (No. 8, 120), eighth-grader Kenny O'Neil (No. 9, 126), senior Sean O'Neil (No. 2, 160), senior Robby Schultz (No. 3, 170), junior Rylee Streifel (No. 2, 195) and junior Alex Hart (No. 2, 220).

The Section 2AAA individual tournament is Feb. 21-22 at Kennedy High School. The top-two finishers in the 14 weights will qualify for state.

The Class 3A state team tournament is Feb. 27 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul with the individual tourney the next two days. The Lakers are have finished third in the team tourney the last three years.
